Diana’s influence is not just in what she has done, but in who she has inspired. Erin Simmons A Passionate Advocate for Youth

Erin Simmons is a visionary leader and advocate dedicated to transforming the lives of children at Mankato Youth (MY) Place. As Executive Director, she has created a safe haven where underserved youth receive support, education, and opportunities to thrive.

Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic was a testament to her unwavering commitment. Understanding that many MY Place children faced extreme poverty, she ensured the organization remained open, providing stability and education during uncertain times.

Beyond her role at MY Place, Simmons empowers young women by providing mentorship and essential life skills. One young girl, concerned about caring for her siblings when her father was released from prison, found guidance and support through Simmons’ compassionate leadership. Her dedication extends beyond immediate needs, fostering long-term resilience and self-sufficiency among the youth she serves.

A passionate advocate for community engagement, Simmons shares powerful stories that spark essential conversations about equity and inclusion. She tirelessly works to secure donations and organize initiatives such as free meals, holiday events, and school supply drives. Her work not only benefits individual children but also strengthens the community, inspiring systemic change and increased support for at-risk youth.

Laura Stevens A Champion for Youth and Community

Laura is a force for good in the Greater Mankato community, dedicating her career to lifting others up with passion, grace, and unwavering commitment.

After years of leadership at the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota, she is currently the Development Director at Mankato Youth Place (MY Place), a free out of school program that is committed to providing a nurturing environment that empowers youth to build the confidence, knowledge and skills needed to reach their full potential.

At MY Place, Laura has driven incredible opportunity—raising $3.2 million for the organization's new building and ensuring local youth have a safe place to engage socially, have access to academic support, positive programs and a sense of belonging.

Her commitment to community service extends beyond her current role, having served at various nonprofits, including Greater Mankato Area United Way, YWCA Mankato, and the Children’s Museum of Southern Minnesota, where she was a founding board member.

A passionate advocate for philanthropy, Stevens co-founded the Women’s Giving Circle of the Mankato Area Foundation alongside Melanie VanRoekel, successfully mobilizing funds to support nonprofits dedicated to improving the lives of women and children.

For over 50 years, the YWCA Mankato has been honoring individuals and organizations in the Greater Mankato area for their outstanding contributions to our community at the annual Women of Distinction event.

This event serves as a platform to recognize those who embody the mission of the YWCA Mankato: eliminating racism and empowering women.

At the heart of our work is the understanding that we cannot achieve our mission alone. The YWCA Mankato depends on and seeks to support individuals and organizations in our community who are dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women. The Women of Distinction event is not just a celebration; it is a testament to the power of collective action and the impact of individuals and organizations dedicated to positive change.   • The following awards are available for individuals and organizations in the Greater Mankato area.

    The Women of Distinction award is given to women who lift up women. Someone who provide direct assistance and advocacy to enhance the quality of life for all, especially those who face disadvantages/challenges in the greater Mankato Community. They break down barriers and carve a path to benefit us now and for generations to come. These women are our partners in working toward our mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

    The Rising Star award is given to a woman, girl, or gender-nonconforming individual who has shown a promise to make a significant contribution to their community through their leadership, innovation, volunteer service, or others special achievements while inspiring other to follow their example. They are emerging in the community and actively working toward the YWCA Mankato’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

    The Distinctive Difference award is given to a business that has made a significant contribution to the community and embodies the YWCA Mankato’s mission of eliminating racism and empowering women. The business supports girls and women in the community by providing resources, removing barriers, and/or advancing their social, physical, and psychological well-being.

    We can not do this work alone. The YWCA Mankato depends on and would like to support people in our community who work toward the mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.

    The $1,000 Advancing Racial Justice grants are intended to uphold the YWCA USA area of focus of Racial Justice & Civil Rights. The grants support and celebrate community-based work, done by individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a person of color (BIPOC), that lifts our mission. “Work” can include volunteerism, activism, advocacy, or business endeavors.

  • We express our heartfelt gratitude to those who take the time to submit nominations for the Women of Distinction awards at YWCA Mankato. In our community, there are countless remarkable individuals actively contributing to positive change and deserving of recognition. It is our mission to celebrate and share the stories of these extraordinary women, and your nominations play a crucial role in making that happen.

    To facilitate the nomination process, the YWCA Mankato staff is available to arrange a phone call or meeting with you, providing assistance in gathering information for the application.

    Moreover, we encourage applicants to complete the application in the language they feel most comfortable using.

    As the nomination committee reviews the applications, it is important to note that they rely solely on the information provided in the application. Assume that the committee is unfamiliar with the nominee and, therefore, include both broad and specific details that vividly illustrate the nominee’s impactful contributions. This approach ensures a comprehensive understanding of the nominee’s story and enhances their chances of receiving the recognition they truly deserve!

  • Nominees are selected through the convening of a nomination committee. The nomination committee is made up of YWCA Mankato board members and past honorees.

    The committee reviews and scores the application based on categories included at the top of each award section on the application and on the YWCA Mankato mission of eliminating racism and empowering women.
