Volunteer Lead for Sewing for Success Program 

Organization: YWCA Mankato 
Location: Mankato, MN 
Position: Volunteer Lead - Sewing Instructor 
Commitment: Once a week for 12 weeks 

Pay: $500 Stipend  

 

About the Program: 
Sewing for Success is an inspiring and creative program designed for East African girls in grades 9-12. This program aims to teach valuable sewing skills while fostering self-expression and cultural appreciation. Participants will learn sewing basics and work towards designing and creating traditional attire. The program culminates in a fashion show where the girls showcase their unique creations. 

Role Overview: 
We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer lead to teach and guide our Sewing for Success program. This individual will be responsible for instructing the participants, planning the curriculum, and overseeing the entire sewing process. The role involves both teaching and logistical responsibilities, including setting up and taking down sewing machines and supplies. 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Teach sewing basics: Instruct participants in fundamental sewing techniques and skills. 

  • Guide design and creation: Lead the girls through the process of designing and creating clothing. 

  • Plan curriculum: Develop and organize a comprehensive curriculum for the 12-week program. 

  • Setup and take down: Manage the setup and breakdown of sewing machines and supplies for each class. 

  • Fashion show coordination: Assist in organizing and preparing for the final fashion show, where participants will present their completed designs. 

Qualifications: 

  • Proficiency in sewing and garment construction. 

  • Experience in teaching or working with youth, preferably in a group setting. 

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to plan and execute a curriculum. 

  • Ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of participants. 

  • Enthusiasm for fostering creativity and cultural understanding. 

  • Availability: Able to commit to approximately 2-3 hours per week for 12 weeks, beginning mid-September.
